About Martha Chapter #5

Martha Chapter was instituted on April 24, 1896, under the Grand Chapter of California as Lady Emma Chapter in honor of Sister Emma Cowles who was the main organizer. The Charter was granted at the Grand Chapter session of California on October 21, 1896. At the request of Emma Cowles, the name was changed to Martha Chapter.

The Chapter was originally located in Wadsworth, Nevada which was a division point of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In June of 1904, the Southern Pacific Railroad moved the division point from Wadsworth to Sparks, Nevada. Over the years, Martha Chapter held meetings in a number of different locations until finally settling at the newly constructed Sparks Masonic Center built by Wadsworth Lodge #25.

The Order of the Eastern Star focuses on charitable work. Nationally, we support charities like Service Dogs and Regenerative Medicine among many other charities. Locally, we support charities like the Veterans Guest House, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation. Last year we raised money and collected supplies for local schools.

Membership is open to Master Masons and all women with a recommendation from a Master Mason and a female member of the Order.
